Everyone needs work. It’s a fact of life. However, there’s more to work that just getting a job. The real money is in finding a career. Let’s face it, not everyone’s going to take out massive student loans. Education prices are so high that paying off the debt after graduations seems insurmountable! And, not everyone is going to be a famous athlete/music star/actor or actress. The service industry (fast food and retail) doesn’t really pay, and factory work (where still available) is boring. What’s left? Check out the Green industry!

The Green Industry has a number of growth potentials within. One of these is the irrigation technician. Irrigation technicians test and diagnose irrigation systems to ensure everything is functioning properly. They make repairs when their tests fail. Their job is to keep the water flowing correctly.

Irrigation technicians can work at many different types of areas. They may travel from house to house, working for home owners. Or, they could cities, parks, malls, hotels, or on other large properties. They ensure proper watering, find and stop leaks, and more using the latest technologies in irrigation.

This type of job may require a high school diploma or GED. Irrigation technicians will need to know how to read, and have decent problem solving skills. Most companies like to see at least one year (one season) of professional experience on jobsites. This is to ensure their irrigation technician as a working knowledge of basic irrigation. There will be travel, so a valid driver’s license is always handy. This is a job working with people, from property owners or managers, to crew members, sales reps, and business leaders. Most companies look for team players that value the importance of teamwork.

Skills most companies look for in an irrigation technician normally include:

  • Maintaining a safe work environment
  • Cleanliness (yes, it’s a dirty job and clean equipment last longer!)
  • The ability to operate plows, and other vehicles and equipment
  • Scheduling their time
  • Quickly diagnosing problems
  • Knowing how to get repairs completed quickly
  • Ability to work with customers.

The best part about Green Industry carriers is that they actually pay. The average pay for an irrigation technician is a little over $16 per hour. That’s good pay for real work that you will be proud of at the end of the day.
